Since 1993 a lot has changed. I lost my first wife to cancer, my New Orleans house to hurricane Katrina, and had a heart attack at 53. I also became a Christian in 2002. I am now remarried to Tammy Matte of Lafayette, LA. Between us we have 6 kids and 8 grandkids. We have an apartment in Arlington VA and a house in Lafayette LA. I am a senior executive (non political appointee) in Washington DC and Direct the Office of Oil and Gas Research for the United States at the Department of Energy.

Before DC, I spent 40 years in the oil industry in leadership and senior advisory roles, including two stints as CTO at engineering-geoscience-computer science companies. PhD Harvard - Chemical Physics, and BSc McGill

Outside North America, I have had the good fortune to lead projects and develop business in over 30 countries on all (populated) continents. Spent a year in the Netherlands and significant time working in Colombia and Brazil

Our children live in New Mexico and Louisiana. We are very proud of them - two physicians, a nurse practitioner, entrepreneur, full-time mom (former counselor), and professional Jazz musician turned restauranteur. One grandchild at Yale and all the way down to a sweet 3 month old.

Tammy is truly my better half - right-brained, creative, warm and outgoing. Significantly younger than I am, she raised four kids on her own for 20 years. BS in accounting, worked in sales and training, and now pursuing a Master's in social work.

Aha! Long time... Looking back I appreciate the Swim team experience, the band, orchestra and choir, and gym! Those elements helped me to keep up all the other stuff like latin (as someone mentioned!) and it was all helpful in later life I suspect! ... after MRHS went to Mount Alison for a music Education degree and it was a fun time to be independent and enjoy both the swim team and the music field - I played with the NB youth orchestra which had concerts conflicting with swim meets - so somehow coach or conductor would manage to have me driven from one place to the other on time to perform! ... then more studying at UdeM in the performance area and more education credentials!... After that, the National Youth Orchestra sent me "home" to Vancouver where my current teacher resided, and I continued my music life there (picked up a music therapy degree)... until I had my son (oops - lucky mistake!) and I decided to get serious, moved to the Island where he would learn where milk came from (not cartons!) and eventually became a French Immersion Kindergarten teacher... but still had time to go to NF for 3 years of real fun with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (while Mario Duschenes was conducting!), and Suzuki Violin teaching... Ah yes and time to get my masters from Royal Roads University, which was also very fun. I am using those skills now as I serve on the board of Work Link here in Langford, though at the time, I did not go in for a leadership postition in teaching despite my training as life changed! It took me 15 years after my father died to convince my family to let my mother move in with me, and she stayed here from age 90 - 98.5 and I have to say we enjoyed her winter of life very well as we attended musical events often, and she was happily active. A great priviledge for me... and now I am Grandmere, of 2 lovely boys who are picking up French and music, and bringing much joy to my heart.... and when I am not busy with those little ones I am still doing music (founding member of the now 25 year Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra), paddling with the Gorging Dragon Team (just went to China with the National Dragon Boat Team ~ over 60s! and won gold medals!) and running my gorgeous Cycle-Inn Bed and Breakfast which keeps me busy and out of trouble ~ for the most part! I consider it a real priviledge to be "an ambasador" to visitors from all around the world... So, I am going to make a big effort to come to this event and see all of you - my old buddies from good old TMR! [and some of you might relate to my fond memories of Lac Manitou]... April 02, 1951 Ottawa ON CA Engineer Single 2018-09-11 12:34:04
I listed "Mechanical Engineer" as my ambition in Torch, and that is what I became, earning a B.Eng. in 1974 and a Ph.D in 1983 from Carleton University. I worked for an engineering consulting firm both full and part time while completing my doctorate, and joined Carleton as an Assistant Professor for 3 years after finishing it. My principal area of expertise at that time was heat transfer in nuclear reactors, so I left Carleton and joined a small firm building a small reactor for a submersible in 1987. When that project ended in 1991,  I joined NRC as a senior researcher specializing in turbomachinery (i.e. gas turbines, jet engines) aerodynamics, with an emphasis on computer simulation of turbomachinery flowfields. I left NRC in 2000 to join the Optical Networks division in Nortel as a thermal advisor, where I remained until they were sold to Ciena in 2010. I rejoined NRC in 2010 as a Principal Research Officer in a group specializing in ice crystal icing of jet engine compressors at high altitudes, where I worked until I retired two months ago. I continue to do research on ice crystal icing because I find it interesting and intellectually challenging. Send Tom a MessageSend Tom a Message

After graduating from MRHS - grade 11 was my first and last year there - I went to McGill for modern languages and literature, then discovered my love of anthropology after transferring to U of T a year later.  I did a few interesting jobs between studying anthropology and teaching full-time at McMaster for 27 years, such as writing horoscopes for a TV bingo show in Sudbury, Ontario and fielding all the calls from would-be winners.  Seriously.

My husband Glen and I have been married for 45 years (eek), initially living in Montreal then moving to the golden horseshoe area of Ontario in the 1980s.  We have a 15.5 year old golden retriever.  I retired in 2016 and am happily doing nothing of merit.  So far, so good.

Although I only went to MRHS for 1 year, I attended Dunrae and Russell for elementary school and was in classes with many of you there.  It will be fun to hear what has happened to everyone over the past half century - will one weekend give us enough time to catch up?

MRHS teachers whose influence and inspiration I still feel today include Mrs. Bordo (English), Mme. Knafo (French), Mrs. Huntley (the dreaded Latin) and Mr. Waschal (History).  They look so young in their Torch photos.  I also remember the wonderful Mr. Riddell who taught us music for so many years.

Many thanks to the organizers of the 50th reunion for doing such a fantastic job!
